Boris warns Conservatives to maintain affordable housing investment
May 2010

London mayor Boris Johnson today warned the Conservative side of the coalition that it should maintain investment in affordable housing despite the need for cuts in public spending.

Johnson told Property Week: “Conservatives should remember that Conservatives and Conservative governments get elected and re-elected when they building good quality housing for people who need it. We’re determined to do that in London and that’s a point I’m making to my Conservative friends and colleagues in government.”

Johnson's warning came after the UK housing shortage made negligible impact during the election campaign and has since struggled to rise up the political agenda with the coaliton.
The Mayor was speaking after unveiling a new development of affordable housing by Project Grande (Guernsey), the joint venture between the Candy brothers' CPC Group and the Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabr Al-Thani.

The joint venture partners have redeveloped Peel House, a former Metropolitan Police training centre, on Regency Street, Pimlico, SW1, as the affordable housing contribution to their One Hyde Park project in Knightsbridge. The developers claimed that Peel House represented the largest affordable housing scheme in Westminster for years.
