The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. The FAO, together with a number of partners, is developing Voluntary guidelines on responsible governance of tenure of land and other natural resources to assist states, private sector and civil society to respond to the problems of weak governance in land tenure. 'This is a really exciting opportunity,' says Stuart, 'the aim of the workshops is to come up with practical solutions to help the FAO plan for the implementation of voluntary guidelines to improve land tenure, which is key to providing housing in developing countries. This was brought home to me in my recent trip to India, where the issue of land tenure is vital to slum redevelopment and the provision of housing to the economically weak and those on lower incomes. I am very much looking forward to the session and discussing the options with everyone in Rome.'
